Walk Safely to School Day - 22 May 2026
It was encouraging to see strong participation from students and families in the 2026 Walk Safely to School Day. This national initiative promotes safe walking and commuting practices among primary school children across Australia, supporting healthy lifestyles, road safety awareness, and the reduction of traffic congestion.
Our students were warmly welcomed by staff members and two police officers from the Ryde Local Area Command. The officers addressed the entire school community, reinforcing the importance of proactive and responsible pedestrian behaviours.
Stage 2 Waking Excursion: The Rocks - 7 May
Stage 2 students recently enjoyed a walking excursion to The Rocks, Sydney. The day was filled with exploration as students learned about the fascinating history, architecture, and stories of this iconic area. Guided by staff and parent helpers, students visited historic landmarks, admired heritage buildings, and participated in engaging activities that brought classroom learning to life.
The excursion gave students a wonderful opportunity to connect with Sydney’s past and appreciate the unique character of The Rocks. These photos capture the excitement and curiosity of our young learners as they made new discoveries and enjoyed a memorable day out.
Thank you to all the staff and volunteers who helped make this enriching experience possible!
P&C Movie Night 1 May
Our school community enjoyed a fun-filled evening at the recent P&C movie night, featuring the exciting film Bad Guys 2. Families and students gathered in a relaxed atmosphere to share popcorn, laughter, and plenty of good company. Events like these highlight the wonderful support and involvement of our P&C, helping to strengthen connections and create memorable experiences for everyone. Thank you to all who attended and helped make the night a success!
Anzac Day 2026
On 24th April, our school gathered in the COLA for a simple yet solemn Anzac Day service, led by our Year 6 students. The ceremony honoured the sacrifices and contributions of Australian and New Zealand soldiers in wars. All students sat respectfully throughout the proceedings, reflecting on the significance of the day.
On Saturday, 25th April, our student leaders proudly represented the Smalls Road Public School community at the Ryde Council Anzac Day service held at Anzac Park, West Ryde. Demonstrating respect, dignity, and a deep sense of responsibility, they upheld the spirit of Anzac Day by honouring the sacrifices and legacy of those who served. Mila delivered a touching reading of an Anzac Day poem alongside students from selected primary schools, while Ethan and Lily respectfully laid a wreath on behalf of our community. Through their participation, our student leaders exemplified the values of remembrance, courage, and community that define the Anzac tradition.
Cross Country 2026
Djalgnla Cultural Storytelling / Door Project - Terms 1-3 2026
The Cultural Storytelling / Door Project goes beyond a one-off mural to provide a long-term, whole-school Aboriginal cultural learning journey that meaningfully engages students, teachers, and the wider community. Developed in close consultation with Aunty Lynn, a proud Dharug Elder from the Barramattagal clan, and with guidance from the Yarramundi AECG, the initiative offers a structured and culturally respectful approach to embedding Aboriginal perspectives across key learning areas. Each learning hub has had a door painted following a cultural theme of either bush tucker (blue), artifact (brownish red) or cultural artwork styles or symbols (yellow).
In Term 1, teachers participated in a professional learning focused on exploring Aboriginal perspectives, gaining cultural insight, and discovering practical ways to integrate this learning throughout the curriculum. Later in the Term 1, students in each hub learned about their door topic and hub name in Dharug language. During the first school holiday, each hub had a door painted following a cultural theme of either bush tucker, artifact or cultural artwork styles or symbols. When back at school all stuents were able to partipcate in the painting by adding final touches to the doors.
During Term 2, students engaged within their classes in the creative storytelling phase, developing a class story inspired by the cultural knowledge shared. The completed stories will be displayed alongside the corresponding door artworks. Each year, as new students join the hubs, they will learn about their hub’s door topic and collaboratively participate in the creative storytelling phase to develop a new class story based on the cultural knowledge provided. This annual process introduces fresh topics and meaningful learning opportunities for all students.
As part of our commitment to ongoing cultural learning, both staff and students have access to audio recordings of the Dharug language, including the names of the learning hubs, bush tucker, artefacts, and cultural artwork styles or symbols. This resource enables the school community to learn and incorporate Dharug language into daily communication and learning experiences, fostering greater understanding and respect for Indigenous culture.
Early Term 3, Aboriginal students collaborate closely with Djalgala to create a dance or performance piece in preparation for NAIDOC Week. The project culminates in a whole-school celebration and community morning tea during NAIDOC Week, featuring a Welcome to Country by Aunty Lynn, student storytelling, cultural performances, and teacher reflections.
Harmony Day 2026
Our school community came together to celebrate Harmony Day, recognising the diversity and inclusiveness that make our school a vibrant place to learn and grow. Students and staff embraced the occasion by traditional clothing or wearing orange and participating in activities that highlight the importance of respect, belonging, and acceptance. These photos capture the joyful spirit and unity of Harmony Day, showing how we value every individual and their unique background. Together, we are building a culture where everyone feels welcome and included.
Djalgnla (Dance) Program
We had an enriching and memorable experience during a visit from Djalgala where students engaged in the Dharunga (Dance) Program. This program offered our students a special opportunity to connect closely with Indigenous dance, storytelling, and traditions, greatly deepening their understanding and appreciation of Aboriginal culture. It was an inspiring event that left a lasting impression on all who participated.
